The Pros and Cons of High/Low Letoff
Higher letoff doesn’t only cause a more dramatic flex of the arrow, but it also causes a phenomenon called “micro flex;” the higher the Let off, the worse the micro flex. How does this happen? Well, the higher the let off, the lower the poundage being held at full draw. This creates a more drastic transition from low to peak power creating what we can only describe as a very tight vibration of the arrow at the same time its flexing.
Pros of a High Letoff Setting:
- Allows you to hold less weight when at full draw
- More forgiving at full draw (string doesn't feel like it wants to "jump forward"
Cons of a High Letoff Setting
- High Letoff negatively effects how the arrow behaves and recovers
- Unbalanced weight distribution (bow hand vs release hand,) making it harder to hold the bow steady on target
- The "forgiveness" at full draw opens the door for sloppy/lax shooting form.
- Slower overall arrow velocity on
So why should you set your letoff to as low a percentage as your bow offers?
- Forces better form
- Allows the shooter to hold more balanced and steady on the target
- Better arrow behavior on launch which allows for faster recovery in flight
- Helps attain the highest arrow velocity possible at launch & helps to retain more of that speed downrange due to faster recovery and less "wasted energy."
